Realizing the importance of increasing production, Union Pacific's first vice president and general manager, Thomas C. "Doc" Durant hired General Jack Casement as the Union Pacific's construction boss. Casement brings military discipline and mass organization to the rail line. Sidney Dillon was one of the principal contractors for the Union Pacific during the building of the transcontinental railroad.
